Why Is My Crypto Balance Incorrect?

Why Can a Crypto Balance Look Incorrect?

A balance can appear incorrect when Gem Wallet is showing a different wallet or network, a transaction is still pending, part of the asset is staked or reserved, a token is hidden, or current blockchain data has not loaded.

Start by identifying which value is different:

  • The asset does not appear in the wallet.
  • The asset appears, but its crypto amount is wrong.
  • The total balance and Available balance are different.
  • The crypto amount is correct, but its fiat value is wrong or unavailable.
  • A blockchain explorer and Gem Wallet show different amounts.
important

Do not reinstall Gem Wallet or re-import a recovery phrase as an initial troubleshooting step. First verify the wallet address, network, asset, and public blockchain data using the steps below.

Reproduce and Record the Issue

Use the wallet and asset that already show the unexpected balance. You do not need to send a transaction to reproduce the issue.

  1. Open Gem Wallet and note the selected wallet name.
  2. Select the affected asset and confirm its Network.
  3. Record the displayed crypto amount and fiat value.
  4. Pull down on the wallet or asset screen to refresh it.
  5. Wait for the refresh to finish, then record the values again.
  6. Open the asset menu and select View address on explorer name, when available.

Compare the same wallet address, network, and asset throughout the investigation.

Check the Selected Wallet

Each wallet has its own addresses and balances. If you created or imported more than one wallet, the expected asset may belong to another one.

  1. Note the name of the wallet currently selected in Gem Wallet.
  2. Open the affected asset and select Receive.
  3. Compare the complete receive address with the address that should hold the funds.
  4. Switch to another wallet only if you recognize it and expect the address there.

If the addresses do not match, you are viewing a different wallet. Do not import private keys or recovery phrases supplied by another person to look for the funds.

Check the Asset and Network

Assets with the same symbol can exist on several networks. USDT and USDC, for example, are represented by different tokens on different blockchains.

Verify:

  • The network shown in Gem Wallet.
  • The network used by the transaction or exchange withdrawal.
  • The token contract or token ID, when applicable.
  • The complete receiving address.

A balance held on one network will not appear under the same symbol on another network. If the transfer used an unexpected blockchain, follow What to Do After Sending Crypto on the Wrong Network.

Enable a Hidden Token

If the asset is not visible rather than showing the wrong amount:

  1. Open Manage Tokens from the main wallet screen.
  2. Search for the token name or symbol.
  3. Select the version on the correct network.
  4. Enable the token and return to the wallet screen.

If the token is not listed, verify its contract address and follow How to Add a Token or Custom Token. For the complete missing-asset checklist, see I Don't See My Token in Gem Wallet.

caution

Token names and symbols can be copied. Verify the contract address before enabling or importing an unfamiliar token, and do not interact with unsolicited tokens.

Check Pending Transactions

An incoming transaction may not be included in the balance until the network processes it. An outgoing transaction can also reduce what is available while it waits for confirmation.

  1. Open the asset's activity list.
  2. Select the relevant transaction.
  3. Check whether its Status is Pending, Successful, Failed, or Reverted.
  4. Select View on explorer name to compare the public status.

If it is pending, follow Why Is My Crypto Transaction Pending?. If it is successful but the deposit is missing, follow Crypto Transaction Confirmed but Not Received.

Understand Total and Available Balances

The amount shown as the total balance is not always the amount immediately available to send, swap, or stake. Depending on the asset and network, balance details can include:

  • Available β€” the amount currently available for supported actions.
  • Staked β€” assets delegated or otherwise committed to staking.
  • Reserved β€” an amount that the network requires the account to retain.
  • Pending, locked, frozen, rewards, or earn balances when supported by the asset.

Open the asset and review Balances when Gem Wallet displays balance details. If Available is lower than the total, use the available amount when preparing a transaction.

For staking differences, check the asset's staking screen and transaction activity. Staked funds may require an unstaking or withdrawal process before they become available.

Compare the Balance with a Blockchain Explorer

From the asset screen, open the menu and select View address on explorer name. On the explorer, verify:

  • The complete wallet address.
  • The blockchain network.
  • The native-coin balance.
  • The correct token contract and token balance.
  • Recent incoming and outgoing transactions.

An explorer may organize staked, token, pending, or protocol-held balances differently from Gem Wallet. Compare like-for-like values rather than comparing a portfolio total with one on-chain balance field.

If the explorer shows the expected confirmed balance at the correct address but Gem Wallet does not, refresh the asset screen and continue with the app checks below.

Check the Fiat Value Separately

The crypto balance and fiat value come from different data. A correct token amount can temporarily have a missing or different fiat value when:

  • The market price has changed.
  • The selected fiat currency is different.
  • Price data is unavailable for that asset.
  • A custom or unverified token has no supported price data.

Verify the crypto amount first. Then check the selected currency in Settings and refresh the asset screen. A missing fiat value does not mean that the on-chain asset balance is missing.

Check the App and Connection

If the address, network, asset, and explorer balance are correct:

  1. Confirm that the device has a stable internet connection.
  2. Pull down on the asset screen to refresh again.
  3. Close and reopen Gem Wallet.
  4. Update Gem Wallet to the latest available version.

Do not delete the wallet or app unless you have a verified backup and Gem Wallet support specifically determines that it is necessary.

Contact Gem Wallet Support

Open Settings > Support and provide:

  • The public wallet address.
  • The asset name, symbol, and network.
  • The token contract or token ID, when applicable.
  • The transaction ID for a related transfer.
  • The balance shown by Gem Wallet and the explorer.
  • A screenshot with private information hidden.
  • The refresh and verification steps already completed.
caution

Never share your recovery phrase or private key. They are not required to investigate a balance display issue.
