What Does a Refunded Cross-Chain Swap Mean?

What Does Refunded Mean?

A Refunded cross-chain swap means the provider did not complete the destination side of the swap and returned funds through its refund process. The original source transfer may have completed successfully even though the requested destination asset was not delivered.

Gem Wallet treats Refunded as a completed status. In swap progress, the source transfer is complete and the swap stage is marked refunded; it is no longer waiting for normal swap completion.

important

Do not submit the same swap again until you verify the refund transaction, returned asset, amount, network, and address. A second swap would be a separate transaction with new fees and risks.

Reproduce and Verify the Refunded Status

Use a swap that already shows Refunded. Do not create a swap to reproduce the issue.

  1. Open Gem Wallet and select the source asset used for the swap.
  2. Open the swap from the activity list.
  3. Confirm that its status is Refunded.
  4. Review the source asset, source amount, destination asset, provider, date, and network fee.
  5. Select View on explorer name to open the source transaction.
  6. Record the source transaction ID and deposit or provider address.

The source explorer proves that the initial transfer occurred. It may not show the complete cross-chain status or the return transaction on another network.

Check the Provider's Swap Status

Open the provider's official status page independently and search with the public wallet address, source transaction ID, deposit address, or provider swap identifier.

Verify that the hostname is correct before opening or connecting a wallet. Status lookups normally need only public information; never enter a Secret Phrase or private key.

Find the Refund Transaction

On the provider status page, look for:

  • A final Refunded or equivalent status.
  • The original source transaction.
  • A refund or return transaction ID.
  • The returned asset and amount.
  • The blockchain used for the refund.
  • The complete return address.

Open the refund transaction on the correct blockchain explorer and confirm that the return address matches your Gem Wallet address for that network.

Some providers return funds on the source network, while the exact refund behavior depends on the route and provider. Follow the public transactions rather than assuming the refund appeared on the intended destination network.

Why Is the Refunded Amount Different?

The returned amount may be lower than the amount originally sent because a cross-chain attempt can involve:

  • The source-network transaction fee.
  • Provider or protocol processing fees.
  • A fee for the refund transaction.
  • Network-specific gas, energy, or account costs.
  • Conversion or routing already performed before the refund condition occurred.

Compare the provider's breakdown and both blockchain transactions. Do not calculate the difference using current fiat prices, because market prices can change after the swap attempt.

The Provider Shows Refunded but the Balance Is Missing

  1. Confirm that the refund transaction is Successful or Confirmed, not pending.
  2. Verify the complete recipient address.
  3. Confirm the returned network and asset or token contract.
  4. Open that wallet and asset in Gem Wallet.
  5. Pull down to refresh the asset screen.
  6. If the token is hidden, use Manage Tokens or add the verified token contract.
  7. Compare the confirmed explorer balance with Gem Wallet.

If the explorer shows the refund at your address but Gem Wallet does not display it, follow Why Is My Crypto Balance Incorrect?.

The Refund Transaction Is Still Pending

A provider can decide to refund before the return transaction is fully confirmed. Use the refund transaction's explorer to monitor its status.

Do not create another swap or send funds to the provider address while the refund is pending. Follow Why Is My Crypto Transaction Pending? for the network-level checks.

Why Was the Swap Refunded?

The public provider record may identify a reason such as:

  • The quote, route, or deadline expired.
  • The received deposit did not satisfy the route requirements.
  • The destination transaction could not be completed.
  • Liquidity or price conditions changed.
  • A destination address, memo, or asset requirement was invalid.
  • The provider encountered a route or network failure.

Do not guess from the wallet status alone. Use the provider record and transaction explorers to determine the documented reason.

Before Trying the Swap Again

  1. Wait until the refund is confirmed and spendable.
  2. Confirm the returned network and asset.
  3. Request a new quote in Gem Wallet.
  4. Review the provider, route, destination address, amount, minimum received, slippage, and fees.
  5. Keep enough native coin for a new source transaction.

A previous refund does not guarantee that the same route will succeed later. Route availability and quotes are live.

What to Give Support

Open Settings > Support and provide:

  • The source and refund transaction IDs.
  • The provider name or swap identifier.
  • The source and expected destination networks.
  • The sent and returned assets and amounts.
  • The complete public return address.
  • Redacted screenshots of the provider and explorer statuses.

Never provide your Secret Phrase or private key. Gem Wallet cannot force a provider refund or reverse confirmed blockchain fees, but support can help interpret the public records.

Refunded Swap Checklist

  • Confirm Refunded in Gem Wallet.
  • Record the source transaction and provider.
  • Find the official provider status record.
  • Locate the refund transaction ID.
  • Verify the returned asset, network, amount, and address.
  • Wait for the refund transaction to confirm.
  • Refresh or enable the returned asset in Gem Wallet.
  • Request a new quote before attempting another swap.
