What Happens to My Crypto If Gem Wallet Stops Working?

Your Crypto Isn't Stored in the App

Your crypto is recorded on each blockchain, not inside Gem Wallet. The app is a tool that holds your keys on your device and lets you see and move your funds.

As long as you have your Secret Phrase, you can reach your funds with Gem Wallet or with another compatible wallet app, whatever happens to Gem Wallet. See What Is a Self-Custodial Wallet?

If Gem Wallet Has a Temporary Problem

Some features rely on Gem Wallet's servers and the network nodes the app connects to, such as prices, transaction history, push notifications, and swap quotes. If those are slow or down:

  • Your funds are safe on the blockchain, and nothing about them changes.
  • Balances and history you've already loaded stay on screen.
  • You can switch a network to another node, including your own, in Settings > Preferences > Networks. See Setup a Custom RPC on Gem Wallet.
  • Check Gem Wallet's official channels for updates. See How to Verify Official Gem Wallet Links.

If the App Isn't Available in Your Store

Gem Wallet is distributed in several places. If one isn't available to you, you can still install it from another official source, such as Google Play, the App Store, F-Droid, or the direct Android download. See the download list in Is Gem Wallet Open Source?

Only install from official sources. See How to Recognize a Fake Gem Wallet App.

If Gem Wallet Ever Stops Operating

You'd still have full control of your funds:

  1. Your Secret Phrase works in other wallets. Gem Wallet uses the standard Secret Phrase format, so you can import it into another wallet app that supports your networks.
  2. Check your addresses. Other apps may use different derivation paths on some networks, so compare each address with the one Gem Wallet showed. See Gem Wallet Derivation Paths.
  3. The code is public. Gem Wallet is open source, so its code stays available for anyone to review or build. See Is Gem Wallet Open Source?

Positions with third-party protocols, such as staking or Hyperliquid perpetuals, also live on their blockchains and can be managed from any wallet that supports them.

How to Prepare Now

  • Back up your Secret Phrase offline, and check that it's written down correctly. See Backup Gem Wallet.
  • Note your addresses on the networks you use, so you can recognize them in another app.
  • Keep your phone and app updated to the latest version from an official store.
warning

During an outage or rumors about Gem Wallet, scammers often pretend to offer "recovery" help. Never share your Secret Phrase, and never enter it on a website. Gem Wallet will never ask for it.
