Is Gem Wallet Open Source?
Is Gem Wallet Open Source?â
Yes. The Gem Wallet apps for iOS and Android are open source. All of their code is public on GitHub in the gemwalletcom/wallet repository, and anyone can read it.
The code is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL-3.0). You can read, copy, and modify it, and anything built from it and shared with others must also stay open source under the same license.
What's in the Repository?â
The repository holds both apps and the code they share:
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| iOS app | The iPhone and iPad app, written in Swift |
| Android app | The Android app, written in Kotlin |
| Shared core | The blockchain logic both apps use, written in Rust: creating keys, signing transactions, and talking to networks and swap providers |
Because both apps use the same core, a network or swap provider usually works the same way on iOS and Android.
Why Open Source Matters for a Walletâ
Gem Wallet is a self-custodial wallet: your Secret Phrase and private keys stay on your device, and Gem Wallet never holds your funds. Open source lets you check that for yourself instead of taking it on trust.
- Anyone can review the code, including how keys are created, stored, and used to sign.
- Changes are public. Every update to the apps is visible as a commit in the repository.
- Security researchers can find and report issues before they affect users.
Being open source doesn't make crypto risk-free. Scams, fake apps, and phishing links target users, not the code. See How to Secure Your Wallet.
Where to Download Gem Walletâ
Only install Gem Wallet from official sources:
- App Store for iPhone and iPad
- Google Play for Android
- F-Droid, an app store that only lists open-source apps
- Android APK releases on GitHub
An app that says it's "open source" isn't automatically safe. Scammers copy open-source code to build fake wallets. Check that the app comes from one of the sources above. See How to Recognize a Fake Gem Wallet App and How to Verify Official Gem Wallet Links.
How to Report a Security Issueâ
If you find a vulnerability in Gem Wallet, email [email protected] with a description, the steps to reproduce it, and any screenshots or logs. Don't post security issues publicly before the team has had a chance to fix them.
For bugs that aren't security issues, contact support from Settings > Support in the app.
Can I Contribute?â
Yes. Developers can open issues and pull requests on GitHub. The repository's README explains how to build the iOS and Android apps, and its contributing guide explains how changes are reviewed.
