Gem Wallet Derivation Paths

Derivation Paths by Network

A Multi-Coin wallet in Gem Wallet creates one address per network from your Secret Phrase, always on the first account and first address of that network's path. You can't choose another path when you import.

This table matches the paths in Gem Wallet's open-source code. See Is Gem Wallet Open Source?

Importing a Secret Phrase from Another Wallet

When you import a Secret Phrase from another wallet app, Gem Wallet shows the same address on a network only if that app used the same path as in the table above. Otherwise, Gem Wallet shows a different, usually empty, address. Your funds are still safe at the old address.

Paths often differ when:

  • You used a second account or later in the other app. Gem Wallet only uses the first account.
  • Your Bitcoin was on a Legacy (1…), Nested SegWit (3…), or Taproot (bc1p…) address. Gem Wallet uses Native SegWit (bc1q…).
  • The other app uses its own path for a network. This is common on Solana, TRON, XRP Ledger, Stellar, TON, and Cardano.
tip

Before you import, note the address that holds your funds on each network in your old app. After importing, compare it with the address on Receive in Gem Wallet. Your old app may also show the path it uses in its account or advanced settings.

What to Do When an Address Doesn't Match

You have two options:

  1. Send the funds from your old app. Keep the old app until you've sent everything to your Gem Wallet address on the same network. This works for every network.
  2. Import that address's private key. Export or derive the private key for the old address and import it into Gem Wallet as a single-network wallet. This works for most networks, but not for Bitcoin-family networks or Cardano. See How to Get Your Private Key from a 12-Word Recovery Phrase.

Many wallet apps can show an individual private key in their settings, so you may not need to derive it yourself.

warning

Never enter your Secret Phrase on a website, and never share it or a private key with anyone. Gem Wallet support will never ask for them.

Using Your Gem Wallet Phrase in Another App

The same applies the other way. If you import your Gem Wallet Secret Phrase into another app, check each network's address against the table above. If an address doesn't match, send the funds from Gem Wallet or import the private key into the other app.
