What to Do If You Forgot a Memo or Destination Tag

Why Does a Memo or Destination Tag Matter?​

Some exchanges and custodial platforms use one blockchain address for many customer accounts. A memo, destination tag, or comment tells the platform which account should receive the deposit.

The blockchain can confirm a transfer to the correct address even when the receiving platform cannot automatically credit it because the identifier is missing or incorrect.

The recipient decides whether a memo or tag is required. Copy it from the receiving platform's deposit instructions rather than guessing it.

Does Receiving in Gem Wallet Require a Memo?​

No. Gem Wallet is self-custodial and gives the wallet its own receiving address. For networks that commonly use these identifiers, the Gem Wallet receive screen displays No memo required or No destination tag required.

A memo can still carry optional information, but Gem Wallet does not need one to identify your wallet. This differs from sending to an exchange deposit address.

Reproduce the Pre-Send Check Safely​

Use the deposit page of an account you control, and stop before confirming the transaction:

  1. Open the receiving exchange's deposit page.
  2. Select the exact asset and network.
  3. Check whether it supplies both an address and a memo, destination tag, or comment.
  4. In Gem Wallet, open that asset and select Send.
  5. Enter or scan the deposit address.
  6. Enter the identifier in the Memo field exactly as supplied.
  7. Continue to the confirmation screen and verify the address, network, amount, and memo.
  8. Close the confirmation screen without submitting the test.

When Gem Wallet's transaction scan identifies that a destination requires an identifier and the field is empty, the confirmation screen can show: destination wallet address requires a destination tag / memo. Do not proceed without checking the receiving platform.

Never send funds solely to reproduce a missing-memo problem. These checks can be completed before broadcasting a transaction.

Check a Transaction That Was Already Sent​

  1. Open the asset in Gem Wallet.
  2. Select the transaction from the activity list.
  3. Check its Status.
  4. Review the Memo shown in the transaction details, when present.
  5. Select View on explorer name and confirm the transaction ID, recipient address, network, amount, and memo or tag.

If the Transaction Is Pending​

A memo cannot normally be added to a transaction after it has been submitted. Do not send a second transfer while the first remains unresolved.

If the Transaction Failed​

The intended deposit did not complete. Verify the recipient's current deposit instructions, including its supported network and required identifier, before trying again.

Network fees from the failed attempt may not be refundable.

If the Transaction Is Successful​

Gem Wallet cannot edit the confirmed transaction, add a missing memo, or retrieve funds held by the receiving platform.

Contact the exchange or custodial platform that controls the destination address. Provide:

  • The transaction ID.
  • The asset and network.
  • The deposit address.
  • The amount and approximate time.
  • The memo or destination tag that should have been used.
  • The incorrect memo or tag, if one was included.

Follow only the platform's official recovery process. Recovery availability, fees, and processing time are controlled by the receiving platform and are not guaranteed.

Support may ask you to prove ownership of the sending account, but it never needs your recovery phrase or private key. Do not share them.

What If You Used the Wrong Memo or Tag?​

Treat an incorrect identifier the same way as a missing one. The blockchain may have delivered the funds to the platform's address, but the platform may have associated them with the wrong account or left them uncredited.

Contact the receiving platform immediately with both the transaction details and the correct identifier.

Avoid Memo and Destination Tag Problems​

  • Copy both the address and identifier from the current deposit screen.
  • Confirm that the asset and blockchain network match in both apps.
  • Do not reuse old deposit instructions without checking them again.
  • Compare the complete identifier before confirming.
  • Send a small test deposit and wait for it to be credited.
  • When sending to Gem Wallet, follow its receive-screen message: No memo required or No destination tag required.
