How to Pay a Merchant with WalletConnect Pay
What Is WalletConnect Pay?â
WalletConnect Pay lets a merchant request a crypto payment with a QR code or payment link. When you scan it with Gem Wallet, you see a payment review instead of a dApp connection: the merchant, the price, and the asset you will pay with.
The merchant sets the price, usually in a fiat currency such as USD. Gem Wallet asks WalletConnect Pay which assets in your wallet can cover it and shows the amount you will send in that asset.
WalletConnect Pay works with EVM networks in Gem Wallet, such as Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, BNB Chain, and Polygon. The merchant decides which assets and networks it accepts, so the options you see depend on both the merchant and the balances in your wallet.
WalletConnect Pay is different from a regular WalletConnect connection. A payment does not connect your wallet to a dApp, and nothing stays connected after you pay.
Before You Payâ
- Use the wallet that holds the asset you want to pay with. Gem Wallet only offers assets from the wallet that is open.
- Keep some of the network's coin, such as ETH on Ethereum or Base, available for the network fee when the payment is sent as a transaction.
- Check that the merchant name on the payment review matches the store you are paying.
Pay with WalletConnect Payâ
Step 1 - Scan the Payment Codeâ
Open Gem Wallet and tap the Scan icon in the top-left corner of the wallet screen. Point the camera at the merchant's WalletConnect Pay QR code.
If the QR code was sent to you as an image, you can also pick that image from your photos in the scanner.
Step 2 - Review the Paymentâ
Gem Wallet opens a Payment screen with:
- The merchant name and icon.
- The price the merchant is asking for.
- Pay with: the asset and network that will be used, and the amount of that asset.
- The Network Fee, when the payment is sent as a transaction.
Step 3 - Choose the Asset to Pay Withâ
If more than one asset in your wallet can pay the invoice, tap Pay with and select another asset. The list only shows assets the merchant accepts. The amount and fee update for the asset you select.
Step 4 - Complete Payment Verification, If Askedâ
Some merchants need more information before they accept a payment. In that case, Gem Wallet opens a Payment Verification form from WalletConnect Pay. Fill it in to continue, or close it to cancel the payment.
Step 5 - Confirmâ
Tap Confirm and approve with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Depending on the merchant's payment option, Gem Wallet either:
- sends the payment as a transaction, or
- signs a payment authorization that WalletConnect Pay settles for you.
Some options also need a one-time token approval before the payment. Gem Wallet shows it on the same review and signs it with the same confirmation.
After you confirm, Gem Wallet reports the result to the merchant. A payment sent as a transaction appears in your Activity.
Only pay codes you received from the merchant at checkout. A payment cannot be reversed by Gem Wallet once it is sent. If the merchant name, price, or amount looks wrong, close the review without confirming.
If the Payment Does Not Openâ
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Payment: Expired | The merchant's payment request is no longer valid. | Ask the merchant for a new QR code. |
| Payment: Succeeded or Payment: Processing | This payment has already been paid. | Check with the merchant before paying again. |
| Payment: Cancelled or Payment: Failed | The merchant or WalletConnect Pay closed the request. | Ask the merchant to start a new payment. |
| No payment options | None of the assets in this wallet can pay this invoice on a supported network. | Switch to a wallet that holds an accepted asset, or add funds and scan again. |
| Not enough balance or network fee | The selected asset or the network's coin is too low. | Choose another asset under Pay with, or add funds. |
If a payment was sent but the merchant does not show it as paid, find the transaction in Activity and share its transaction ID with the merchant.
