How to Read a Price Chart in Gem Wallet

Where to Find the Chart

Open any asset from your wallet screen. The price chart sits under the price, followed by the asset's market data, such as market cap and volume. See Understanding Market Metrics.

Choose a Time Period

Tap a period under the chart to change how far back it goes:

PeriodShows
1HThe last hour
1DThe last day
1WThe last week
1MThe last month
1YThe last year
AllAll available history

Line or Candlesticks

For assets that have candle data, a button next to the periods switches the chart between a line and candlesticks. Gem Wallet remembers your choice for every asset. Assets without candle data always show a line, with no button.

  • The line joins the price at each point in time. It's the simplest way to see the overall trend.
  • Candlesticks show how the price moved within each slice of time.

Candlesticks start at 1D, because an hour holds too few candles to read. If you're on 1H when you switch, the chart moves to 1D.

How to Read a Candlestick

Each candle covers one slice of the period and shows four prices:

PriceMeaning
OpenThe price at the start of the slice
CloseThe price at the end of the slice
HighThe highest price during the slice, the top of the thin line (the wick)
LowThe lowest price during the slice, the bottom of the wick
  • A green candle closed higher than it opened. The price went up.
  • A red candle closed lower than it opened. The price went down.
  • The thick body spans the open and close. A long wick means the price reached far from where it opened or closed.

The newest candle follows the latest price, so it changes until its slice ends. Prices are shown in your wallet's currency. Candlesticks don't show trading volume.

Touch and Zoom

  • See a price: touch and hold the chart, then slide sideways. The price and time under your finger appear at the top. On a candle, you'll see its open, high, low, and close.
  • Zoom: pinch to zoom in toward the newest prices. You can zoom in until 14 points or candles are on screen.
  • Go back in time: once zoomed in, swipe sideways to move along the chart.
  • Zoom out: pinch out to return to the whole period.

If the Chart Doesn't Load

If the chart shows that there's no data, Gem Wallet doesn't have price history for that asset or period, often because the token is new or isn't listed by price providers. An error only appears when you're offline. If candlesticks don't load, you can still switch back to the line. See Why Is a Token's Value Missing or Not in My Total?

note

A price chart shows past prices only. It doesn't predict where the price goes next.
